Why we're asking early
Last May, people stopped us on the street asking how they could get involved - and by then it was too late to get materials into their hands.

What is Pedestrian Awareness Month?
What is Pedestrian Awareness Month?
In May 2026, Sheridan held its first Pedestrian Awareness Month, built around a simple message: eyes up, lives ahead.
Posters went up in downtown windows. Stickers went onto coffee cups. Let 'Er Buck Car Wash ordered 6,000 branded air fresheners and handed them out all month, alongside pamphlets and banners. And on May 30, a crowd walked from the Historic Sheridan Inn down to Fifth and Main.
It came together because Sheridan businesses said yes. That's the only way it grows.

Why it matters here
Why it matters here
On May 28, 2025, Julie Fitzsimons pressed the button at Fifth and Main. She waited for the walk signal. She crossed in the crosswalk. She did everything the law asked of her and yet never made it safely to the other side. Tragically the next month, Sheridan lost another of it’s beloved residents.
Talk to almost anyone in this town and they'll tell you about a near miss in a crosswalk. Distraction is a bigger part of driving than it's ever been - phones, touchscreens, the thing you meant to check at the light.
None of that has to be normal. That's what this month is for.

This isn't just a Sheridan problem
In 2024, more than 7,000 people were killed while walking on American roads. That's nearly one in every five traffic deaths in the country.
Over the last decade, pedestrian deaths in the US rose 45 percent. Over those same ten years, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom all brought theirs down.
Wyoming isn't exempt. Between 2020 and 2024, 39 people were killed walking on Wyoming roads, up from 32 in the five years before that. Because of our population, our numbers are small. But they're also going the wrong way.
